The Everest Cardiac Challenge Aug 17th – Nov 30th 2020

World Walking

For ‘The Everest Cardiac Challenge’ we are using a free website called World Walking. This is a volunteer-led charity initiative which was inspired some years ago by the efforts of a Phase IV cardiac rehabilitation exercise group (the Inverclyde Globetrotters) in Scotland.

World Walking allows you to use the distances you walk in the real world to complete imaginary (virtual) walks.  Our challenge will be to walk (only virtually, unfortunately) from Abergavenny to Mount Everest.

Signing up to take part

If you would like to take part in The Everest Cardiac Challenge there are a few simple steps you need to take.

First of all, create your own World Walking account. To register, go to worldwalking.org

Getting Started

This involves just two simple steps.

Step 1: Join our group.

We have created our own group on World Walking; it is called [Everest Cardiac Challenge]. You need to join it. To do that click on ‘My Groups’ on the menu bar at the top of your dashboard (that’s what World Walking calls your homepage) where you will find a ‘Search button’. Enter [Everest Cardiac Challenge] and when our group appears click on it and then click on the blue ‘Join this group’ button.

Step 2: Start our group walk.

Having joined our group you should now start our group’s The Everest Cardiac Challenge walk. To do that click on ‘My Walks’ on the menu bar and you will see that our group walk is available for you to join. Click on it and then click on the blue ‘Join now’ button’.

You are now ready to start adding your steps.

Adding your steps

To log the distance you have walked to help our group complete The Everest Cardiac Challenge you need to deposit your distance in your World Walking ‘bank’ and then ‘spend’ the distance you have ‘banked’ on our walk.

You can ‘spend’ the distance you have ‘banked’ anytime.

To add your steps, login into your World Walking account and then click on the ‘Add Steps’ button.

To ‘spend’ your steps click on the ‘Spend Steps’ button. When you do that The Everest Cardiac Challenge walk will appear. Click on it and then slide the blue dot along the bar to the far right-hand side and click the ‘Spend Distance on Walk’ button.

Setting your default unit of distance

With World Walking, you can enter your distances in steps, kilometers or miles.

To help you enter your distance correctly you can set a default unit of distance. To do this click on ‘Settings’ on the menu on your dashboard and select the value you prefer to use when entering the distance you walk.

What if you enter the wrong number of steps?

We all make mistakes – it happens to the best of us. Don’t worry. You can delete (or undo) distance from your ‘bank’ as long as:

  • You haven’t spent the distance on our walk, or you have enough steps in your bank to delete the banked distance.
  • The distance was manually added and not automatically pulled in through a wearable device e.g. your Fitbit.
  • The distance was recently added (at most 1 month ago) and shows in the “Recent Activity” when you click the ‘Add Steps’ button.

Here is a link to an article in our ‘Help’ section which explains how to do this: https://worldwalking.org/help/article/1822/how-do-i-delete-distance-from-my-bank

If you need help

If you need help, have a look in the World Walking ‘Help’ section (there is a ‘Help’ tab at the bottom of each page on World Walking). If you don’t find what you need just click the ‘Get in touch’ button and World Walking will be very pleased to help you.
